How to Change Your Watch Strap: A 5-Minute Tutorial

How to change watch strap in under five minutes

Three methods cover 95% of watches on wrists today. We walk each in order of complexity. Learning how to change watch strap setups properly protects your watch case, your strap, and your patience.

What you'll need

  • A clean flat surface (cloth or microfiber)
  • Good lighting
  • A spring bar tool (for method 1)
  • The new strap, ready to go

Method 1: Spring bar tool (standard watches)

Classic method. Works on almost any watch with traditional lugs.

  1. Lay watch face-down on cloth. Locate spring bar slot on inner side of lug.
  2. Insert forked end of spring bar tool into slot. Push spring bar inward until lug end clears.
  3. Tilt strap out while keeping pressure. Spring bar releases with strap.
  4. Repeat on other lug.
  5. Insert new spring bars into new strap. Compress one end into lug hole, then guide other end until it clicks.
  6. Tug-test both sides.

Time: 3-5 minutes once you've done it twice.

Method 2: Quick-release strap

Modern straps ship with quick-release pins. No tool required.

  1. Flip watch face-down.
  2. Find small lever on underside of strap, near lug.
  3. Slide lever toward strap center. Pin retracts.
  4. Lift strap away.
  5. On new strap: align pin, slide lever, drop into place, release.

Time: under a minute.

Method 3: POPSTRAP cage wrap (Swatch x AP 40mm)

The Swatch x AP ships with an integrated silicone strap. To change the look, you don't change the strap, you cage it.

  1. Leave the original Swatch strap on. Do not attempt to remove it.
  2. Open the POPSTRAP cage at the clasp section.
  3. Wrap the cage around the original strap, aligning with the case shoulders.
  4. Close the cage at the clasp.
  5. Adjust position until flush against the case on both sides.

Time: under 60 seconds. No tools, no case contact, fully reversible. Silicone strap guide.
