Why Made in France Still Matters for Premium Accessories

"Fabriqué en France" sells for 40-60% more than the same product made in Asia. What does that premium actually buy? Here is the honest breakdown.

The Royal Pop arrived from Switzerland; the cage strap that lifts it ships from France — OFG-eligible, Bureau Veritas auditable, single-atelier traceable. For Royal Pop owners, that distinction is the whole point: a Swiss watch head paired with a genuinely French accessory, not a Made-in-France label slapped on Asian molding.

Origine France Garantie, step by step

The OFG certification requires (a) at least 50% of the unit cost added in France, and (b) the final "essential" transformation completed on French soil. The label is not self-claimed — Bureau Veritas audits compliance. POPSTRAP is OFG-eligible: the silicone is mixed, molded, finished, and QC’d in our Loiret workshop.

Our atelier

One site. Twelve people. Eight injection machines. Three generations of silicone expertise. The entire POPSTRAP product passes through this single facility from raw silicone to packaged unit. Traceability is total. Read the longer workshop story.

Supply chain visibility

When something goes wrong (and things go wrong), we know exactly which batch, which mold, which day. Compare that with a Shenzhen factory making 200 SKUs for 40 brands at once — traceability is a fairy tale at that scale.

Labor standards and real wages

French workshop wages: roughly 3-4× Chinese mainland equivalents. Why we pay it: better consistency, lower turnover, deeper expertise. The same operator has been doing flash-trimming on our straps for two years — you can see it in the edges.

Environmental regulation as a feature

REACH (the EU chemical regulation) bans 224 substances of very high concern. Compliance is mandatory for production within the EU. Asian-imported products are theoretically subject to it at customs but enforcement is patchy. Made in France means REACH applies at the source.

Why DTC brands are coming home

Three trends are bringing premium DTC manufacturing back to Europe:

  1. Carbon-conscious customers ask where the product is made
  2. Shipping costs from Asia have stabilized higher than 2019 baseline
  3. Small-batch quality controls are easier within a 2-hour drive

The honest numbers

POPSTRAP costs roughly 40€ to manufacture in France. In China it would be 4-8€. We absorb the difference in margin because customers tell us the country of origin matters — not just the marketing claim but the underlying standards.

Made in France. End to end.
