How to Remove Sunscreen and Stains from a Silicone Watch Strap

Sunscreen is the #1 enemy of a clean silicone strap, especially white. The good news: stains are reversible if you act fast. Here is the routine that works.

Why sunscreen stains silicone

Modern sunscreens use chemical UV filters (avobenzone, oxybenzone, octinoxate) that bind with the silicone surface when exposed to heat. The pigments in the filter penetrate the top layer and leave a yellow or orange cast.

The 30-second fresh stain fix

If you notice the stain within an hour:

  1. Take the strap off the watch
  2. Rub a drop of dish soap directly on the stained area
  3. Rinse with cold water
  4. Pat dry

This removes 80% of fresh sunscreen residue.

Set-in stains: the 10-minute method

For stains older than 24 hours:

  1. Mix 1 part baking soda + 3 parts water into a paste
  2. Apply the paste to the stain with a soft toothbrush
  3. Let it sit for 5 minutes
  4. Scrub gently in circular motions for 60 seconds
  5. Rinse with cold water
  6. If the stain persists, repeat once

Stubborn stains: the magic eraser trick

For stains older than a week:

  1. Wet a Mr Clean Magic Eraser (or any melamine sponge)
  2. Gently dab the stain — do not scrub hard, it will dull the silicone finish
  3. Rinse and pat dry

Magic erasers work because melamine foam is mildly abrasive at the microscopic level. Use sparingly.

What to never use

  • Bleach — breaks down silicone bonds
  • Acetone or nail polish remover — strips the silicone surface
  • Hydrogen peroxide — fine on fabric, bad on silicone
  • Steel wool or hard abrasives — leaves permanent scratches

Other common stains

Perfume

Soap + cold water rinse, same as fresh sunscreen.

Self-tanner

DHA (the active ingredient) bonds aggressively with silicone. Use the baking soda paste method, but expect to repeat 2–3 times.

Ink (pen marks)

Rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab, applied directly. Wipe off immediately, rinse. Alcohol is OK in small amounts but do not soak the strap.

Coffee, wine, food

Soap + cold water within 24h. Beyond 24h, baking soda paste.

The best stain is the one you prevent

  • Apply sunscreen before the watch, not after
  • Wait 5 minutes after applying sunscreen before putting the watch on
  • Rinse the strap at the end of the beach day
  • For self-tanner, take the watch off entirely during application
