A strap not worn is still aging. Bad storage can ruin a strap faster than wearing it daily. Here is the rule book.
The three enemies of stored straps
- UV light — sunlight breaks down silicone, leather, and most polymers over months
- Heat cycles — repeated warming and cooling causes elasticity loss
- Pressure — stacking heavy items on straps creates permanent creasing
Storage by material
Silicone
Flat or loosely rolled. Cool, dry, dark drawer. Lasts 5+ years stored properly.
Leather
Hung or flat. Cool, dry, dark. Apply leather conditioner every 6 months. Avoid plastic bags (traps moisture).
NATO / nylon
Rolled or flat. Most forgiving — just keep dry.
Metal (mesh, bracelet)
Hung or flat in a cloth pouch (prevents scratches against other items).
Drawer position matters
The top drawer of a desk near a window can hit 35°C in summer. A bottom drawer in a closet stays at 18-22°C year-round. That 15°C difference is the difference between a strap lasting 5 years and lasting 3.
The ideal storage container
- Watch box with felt-lined compartments (avoids strap-on-strap pressure)
- Cotton pouch (breathable, no plastic)
- Cardboard box with tissue paper (cheap, effective)
- Avoid: airtight plastic bags, ziplocks for long-term, metal tins
The creasing problem
Silicone has memory. A strap folded tight for 6 months will keep that crease for weeks of wearing. To prevent: store flat or loosely rolled with a soft core (a wine cork works perfectly).
Seasonal rotation
If you own multiple POPSTRAP colorways, rotate which one is in active storage every few months. Even silicone benefits from being moved — prevents permanent shape memory.
What about the original packaging?
Keep it. POPSTRAP kraft tubes are ideal storage — cardboard breathes, no light, no pressure, perfect dimensions.
When to give up on stored straps
Signs a stored strap is past saving:
- Hard or stiff to bend (silicone has cured beyond elastic)
- Surface tackiness (plasticizer migration, common in cheap silicone)
- Permanent creases that don't smooth out in 48 hours of wear
- Color change in any direction
