The water doesn't care how much your strap cost. Below the surface, salt, pressure, and a neoprene glove will find every weak point a strap has. Leather rots. Steel pinches and traps grit. Cheap rubber goes brittle and cracks at the lugs. If you dive — scuba or breath-hold — your strap is gear, not decoration. It should behave like it.
This is a field guide to choosing a dive strap that survives the descent and the rinse after. We make one thing, so we'll be straight with you about what actually matters down there.
What the water actually does to a strap
Three forces work against your strap on every dive. Salt water is corrosive and crystallises in seams and spring-bar gaps as it dries, slowly working materials loose. Pressure compresses everything — a strap that fits dry on the surface can feel different at depth as your wetsuit sleeve compresses around the wrist. And the rinse cycle of repeated wet-dry-wet exposure is what destroys most straps over a season, not the dive itself.
A dive strap therefore needs to be chemically inert, dimensionally stable, and easy to flush clean. That short list eliminates most of the market before you've even tried one on.
Why silicone wins under the surface
Medical-grade, platinum-cured silicone is non-porous, so salt water rinses off instead of soaking in. It doesn't absorb odour, it doesn't harden in cold water, and it shrugs off the chlorine of a training pool and the salt of open water equally. POPSTRAP runs Shore A 50 hardness — firm enough to hold its shape against a glove cuff, soft enough to seal flat against the wrist so it doesn't trap a layer of cold water. You can read the full material breakdown in our silicone strap guide.
Just as important: silicone is the easiest dive material to keep hygienic. A freshwater rinse after every session is enough, and when you want a deeper clean our walkthrough on how to disinfect a silicone watch strap covers it in five minutes.
Strap materials for diving, compared
| Material | Salt-water resistance | Cold-water behaviour | Glove fit | Cleaning |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Platinum-cured silicone | Excellent — non-porous | Stays supple | Flat, low-bulk | Rinse and go |
| Leather | Poor — rots and stiffens | Hardens, cracks | Bulky, absorbs water | Hard to clean |
| Steel bracelet | Good, but traps grit | Cold against skin | Pinches over a glove | Needs disassembly |
| Cheap rubber | Fair — degrades with UV | Goes brittle | Often too thick | Holds odour |
Freediving vs scuba: different demands
The two disciplines stress a strap differently. For scuba, the priority is glove compatibility and a tail long enough to clear a 5–7mm wetsuit sleeve without strangling circulation. For freediving, where you're often barehanded or in thin gloves and care about drag and feel, a low-profile strap that seals flat matters more than length.
- Scuba checklist: long tail, secure keeper, firm enough not to roll under a glove cuff.
- Freediving checklist: minimal bulk, snug flat fit, nothing that snags on a lanyard or line.
- Both: material that survives daily salt-and-rinse without a second thought.
Before you order, measure properly — a dive strap should fit over a thin glove but not gape barehanded. Our size guide walks through it.
A note on the watch itself
If you're diving the Royal Pop, the 40mm Swiss pocket-watch from the Swatch x Audemars Piguet collaboration, check fitment first. The POPSTRAP cage strap is built specifically for that case — details on our compatibility page. For pure depth records you'd still reach for a dedicated dive computer; the Royal Pop is a daily watch you happen to take in the water, and a proper strap is what makes that honest.
The bottom line
A dive strap earns its keep by disappearing — no rot, no smell, no surprise failure at the lugs. Platinum-cured silicone does exactly that, which is why it's the quiet default for anyone who spends real time wet. Built once. Worn forever, on land and under it.
